NBPA Backs NBA’s Move to Tighten Prop Bet Rules
The decision follows the suspension of former Toronto Raptors center Jontay Porter, who admitted to a federal felony for deliberately affecting his game performance to influence prop bet outcomes. Prop bets allow gamblers to wager on individual player achievements, such as points scored or specific in-game statistics. Both the NBA and NBPA representatives agree that tighter restrictions on the kinds of prop bets offered during NBA games are necessary to preserve the sport’s integrity.

Michael Porter Jr., brother of Jontay Porter, shared insights on a podcast regarding the pressure players may feel to manipulate their performances to favor bettors. He described potential scenarios where a player might intentionally underperform or feign injury, allowing friends who placed large bets on their restored performance to profit.
Michael acknowledged that such actions are unacceptable but noted that players coming from challenging backgrounds might be tempted to help their close ones financially. He also highlighted that the overall environment surrounding sports gambling poses significant problems and is expected to worsen, with players sometimes facing severe threats, including death threats.
