Nashville Explores Hosting a Scaled-Down Version of Las Vegas’ Iconic Sphere Venue
Sphere Entertainment Co., the company behind the spectacular Sphere music venue in Las Vegas, is reportedly in conversations with Nashville’s business community about introducing a smaller version of this innovative concert hall to the city.
Ongoing Discussions on a New Sphere Venue
Sphere Entertainment Co. has shown interest in expanding beyond the Las Vegas flagship Sphere before. Earlier this year, they unveiled plans for a second venue near National Harbor, Maryland, close to Washington D.C. This future location is expected to have approximately 6,000 seats, making it notably smaller than the 20,000-seat venue in Las Vegas. This Maryland project might be the start of a series of similar venues designed to bring the Sphere experience to more cities.
While executives from Sphere Entertainment have remained tight-lipped regarding the Nashville talks, the company’s overarching goal is clear: to build a global network of Sphere venues. James Dolan, chairman and CEO of Sphere Entertainment, has emphasized their search for “forward-looking cities” as ideal candidates for these new entertainment hubs, a phrase he also used during the Maryland project announcement.
The company also aims to broaden its international presence. Currently, a full-size Sphere is under construction in Abu Dhabi as part of their overseas expansion. Plans for a London Sphere were scrapped earlier in 2024 due to political challenges. Meanwhile, there have been reports of discussions and a memorandum of understanding about a potential Sphere in Incheon, South Korea, but nothing has been formally confirmed.
The Significance of a Sphere Venue in Nashville
Nashville’s reputation as the United States’ music capital makes it a natural contender for hosting a Sphere venue. The city’s musical heritage dates back to the 1920s with the opening of the Grand Ole Opry, which played a pivotal role in establishing Nashville as a center for music.
During the mid-20th century, Nashville’s influence grew further with the emergence of the polished “Nashville Sound” and the establishment of Music Row as a key recording hub. Beyond its famed country roots, the city boasts a rich history in genres like R&B and is celebrated for its diverse live music scene, which remains integral to its cultural identity.
A Nashville Sphere could soon become a premier venue for notable artists. This possibility was recently highlighted when Metallica announced a residency at the Las Vegas Sphere, demonstrating the potential for high-profile performers to make such venues their home base.
