MLB Teams Disengage from FanDuel Sports Network Amid Financial Instability

MLB Teams End Partnerships with FanDuel Sports Network
All nine Major League Baseball teams that previously partnered with FanDuel Sports Network have chosen to terminate their agreements, as initially revealed by The Athletic.
Reasons Behind the MLB Franchises’ Withdrawal
The decision comes in light of ongoing financial challenges faced by the parent company, Main Street Sports. This company had declared bankruptcy in March 2023 but has since restructured and resumed operations of the FanDuel Sports Network.
The franchises affected include the Atlanta Braves, Cincinnati Reds, Detroit Tigers, Kansas City Royals, Los Angeles Angels, Miami Marlins, Milwaukee Brewers, St. Louis Cardinals, and Tampa Bay Rays. These teams have, at least for now, stepped back from their arrangements with the network.
In addition to overall financial concerns, several franchises cited unpaid fees as a major factor influencing their decision. Multiple teams reported not receiving the rights-fee payments owed to them, compelling them to pause their relationships with the network.
MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred has acknowledged the teams’ withdrawal from FanDuel Sports Network and confirmed that these franchises have transitioned their media operations to MLB’s own media platform.
Unpaid Fees and Future Outlook
The withdrawal is not necessarily permanent. The teams’ primary worry revolves around missed payments, dating back to the company’s Chapter 11 filing earlier in 2023. This situation has understandably led to frustration among the franchises.
Meanwhile, FanDuel Sports Network is reportedly pursuing new agreements with streaming platforms such as Fubo and DAZN to stabilize its financial footing and improve its service offerings. It’s important to clarify that FanDuel Sports Network, operated by Main Street Sports, is distinct and unrelated to Flutter Entertainment’s sportsbook brand of the same name.
