MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred Addresses League’s Ties with Gambling Firms

MLB Commissioner Highlights the League’s Partnership with Gambling Companies
Major League Baseball, like many professional sports organizations, has both influenced and been influenced by the surge in sports betting. Commissioner Rob Manfred has defended the league’s collaborations with gambling firms, noting that these alliances play a crucial role in monitoring and mitigating potential fraudulent activities.
Understanding the Nature of MLB’s Relationship with Sportsbooks
Manfred explained that the introduction of legalized sports betting brings about the crucial issue of data access, necessitating cooperation between the league and sportsbooks. He pointed out that such partnerships are built on mutual benefit — if the league requests something from betting companies, it must also provide value in return. This reciprocal relationship is how the partnerships have evolved.
Importantly, Manfred clarified that MLB did not advocate for the legalization of sports betting but has adapted to its growing presence. He admitted that the league has limited influence over this development, and that any major changes in sports betting laws would probably come through federal action.
Protecting the integrity of baseball remains MLB’s top priority, according to Manfred. He highlighted the league’s stringent safeguards against any betting-related misconduct and stressed their commitment to providing players with support and resources to address any gambling-related challenges they might face.
Current Investigations and Broader Context of Sports Betting Scandals
Manfred shared that MLB’s investigation into suspicious betting activity, now in its fourth month, currently focuses on players Clase and Ortiz. The inquiry began after an Ohio sportsbook reported unusual wagering patterns on games involving the Cleveland Guardians to the Ohio Gaming Commission.
As a result of the ongoing investigation, Clase has encountered obstacles in securing winter league opportunities. The Dominican Winter League has barred him from playing this year, and the Guardians have denied his request to join a team in Venezuela.
MLB is not alone in grappling with betting scandals. Recently, Congress requested a briefing from NBA Commissioner Adam Silver regarding a growing gambling investigation within the NBA. This controversy has already led to arrests, including those of Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups, Miami Heat player Terry Rozier, and former NBA athlete Damon Jones.
