Michael Dugher Leaves Betting & Gaming Council to Join Brunswick Group

Michael Dugher Steps Down from the Betting & Gaming Council
Michael Dugher has announced his departure from the Betting & Gaming Council (BGC), the regulatory standards organization for the UK’s betting and gaming industry. After dedicating six years to the council, including time as both its founding CEO and later its chair, Dugher has chosen to move on from the BGC.
Leading Through Industry Reforms and Challenges
Initially serving as the BGC’s first CEO for four years, Dugher later transitioned to the role of chair. Throughout his tenure, he played a crucial role in navigating the industry through a series of regulatory transformations and challenges, helping to establish a unified voice for various sectors such as land-based casinos, bookmakers, online operators, and bingo providers.
Under Dugher’s leadership, the BGC actively engaged with significant regulatory initiatives, including the Gambling Act Review and the release of the Gambling White Paper, both of which introduced important proposals for regulatory improvements. He also championed the launch of 20 enhanced safer gambling codes that encompassed 100 new standards to better protect players.
Beyond regulatory work, Dugher was passionate about supporting charitable causes related to horse racing. He spearheaded notable events like the Britannia Stakes charity race at Royal Ascot and the Grand National Charity Bet, raising over £6.5 million for various charitable organizations.
New Role at Brunswick Group and Continued Advisory Work
Following his departure, Dugher will take on the position of head of the UK public affairs practice at Brunswick Group, a leading global advisory firm. In addition to this role, he plans to continue offering his expertise as a freelance business advisor and will maintain his involvement as a board member of Nottingham Forest Football Club.
Reflection on Achievements and Industry Impact
Reflecting on his time at the BGC, Dugher expressed pride in the council’s accomplishments in elevating industry standards, promoting responsible gaming, and raising substantial funds for charitable initiatives. He highlighted the challenges the council faced amid widespread misunderstandings about betting, noting the importance of the organization’s role in guiding the regulated sector through government reviews.
Dugher acknowledged the efforts of his team in preventing the implementation of overly strict and disproportionate regulations proposed by anti-gambling advocates. He extended his gratitude to colleagues and supporters and wished the gambling industry success moving forward.
Tributes from Industry Leaders
Grainne Hurst, the current CEO of the BGC, praised Dugher for his leadership during a pivotal time for Britain’s gaming industry reforms, recognizing the lasting and positive legacy he leaves behind. Similarly, Ian Proctor, Chair of Flutter UK & Ireland, commended Dugher’s contributions and wished him continued success in his future ventures.
