MGM Resorts Powers Las Vegas Casinos with 100% Solar Energy During Daytime

MGM Achieves Full Daytime Solar Power for Las Vegas Casinos
MGM Resorts International has announced a major achievement in its commitment to renewable energy. The company’s casinos on the Las Vegas Strip are now fully powered by solar energy during daytime hours, marking a significant step in its environmental initiatives.
Expanding Solar Capacity to Reduce Environmental Impact
This milestone was reached through the addition of 115 MW of solar power and 400 megawatt-hours of battery storage provided by the new Escape Solar and Storage Project in Lincoln County, Nevada. This new energy source complements MGM’s existing 100 MW Mega Solar Array, more than doubling the resort’s renewable energy capacity.
The combined solar power systems enable MGM to harness clean energy more efficiently. The battery storage component allows the company to save excess solar energy generated during peak times for use in the evening and periods of low sunlight, contributing to greater energy resilience and sustainability.
A Long-Term Commitment to Renewable Energy
MGM secured a 25-year agreement to source clean energy through the Escape Solar Project in 2024. This aligns with the company’s broader goal of minimizing its carbon footprint and increasing its reliance on sustainable power sources by 2030.
Since 2016, MGM Resorts has made significant investments to expand its renewable energy portfolio. These efforts include the installation of a 323,000-panel Mega Solar Array delivering 100 MW, 26,000 panels atop the Mandalay Bay Convention Center generating 8.3 MW, and 3,456 panels on the parking garage roof at MGM Springfield, Massachusetts. The company also maintains a 100 kW rooftop solar array for the T-Mobile Arena.
CEO Highlights Sustainable Progress
Bill Hornbuckle, president and CEO of MGM Resorts International, expressed pride in the company’s advancements toward clean energy use. He emphasized that the latest project accelerates MGM’s goal of achieving 100% renewable electricity across its U.S. operations by 2030.
Hornbuckle stated that the escape solar and storage initiative, along with the existing Mega Solar Array, demonstrates MGM’s commitment to scalable, impactful, and sustainable energy solutions while maintaining strong operational performance.
