Meta Enforces Stricter Regulations on Gambling Promotions

Meta has introduced enhanced regulations to curb gambling advertisements that aim to encourage spending without proper verification on its platforms. This move targets unauthorized promotions that may mislead users and ensures stricter oversight.

New Verification Requirements for Gambling Ads on Facebook and Instagram

Effective immediately, any gambling-related advertisement on Facebook or Instagram must be approved through the Permissions and Verifications section in the advertiser’s Business Suite account. Without this formal approval, promoting gambling content is prohibited.

This change aims to reduce illegal gambling ads online and to address concerns from national regulators who have been increasingly critical of Meta’s previous advertising policies.

The updated rules cover all forms of gambling promotions, including sports betting, online casinos, lotteries, prize-based games, poker, and related operators.

Meta requires advertisers to fulfill several conditions designed to protect consumers. Applicants, including suppliers, operators, and intermediaries, must submit their applications in English and provide all requested information to gain approval to advertise.

Influencers Subject to the Same Advertising Restrictions

Meta also focuses on social media influencers who promote gambling content, often through videos showcasing big wins that indirectly advertise gambling services. These individuals will no longer be able to bypass the new rules.

If an influencer shares promotional gambling content, they must register as affiliates and obtain approval from Meta. This policy aims to ensure accountability and transparency for all parties involved in gambling promotions on Meta’s platforms.

Although comprehensive, the effectiveness of these regulations will need to be evaluated over time to determine how well they prevent unregulated gambling advertising.
