Mark Gottlieb from the Public Health Advocacy Institute at Northeastern University highlights how the growth in sports betting has already introduced many new gamblers who often desire continuous betting opportunities. He cautions that legalizing online casinos could increase gambling-related harms, particularly impacting residents across the Boston area.
Andrea Freeman, policy director at the Public Health Institute of Western Massachusetts, points to the convenience of online gambling, allowing individuals to place bets anytime without traveling to a physical casino such as MGM Springfield. The institute she represents is actively opposing the introduction of online casinos, citing rising rates of underage gambling in several local schools, including involvement with online betting and sports wagering.
Interestingly, opposition has also come from some industry stakeholders. Wynn Resorts has voiced resistance to broadening online gambling access, with company officials emphasizing that mobile gambling may be more addictive than traditional, in-person gaming experiences.
