Survey Shows Most Maryland Residents Against Online Casinos

Recent findings reveal that a significant majority of people in Maryland do not support the legalization of online casinos. A survey conducted by the National Association Against iGaming (NAAiG) exposed widespread resistance among locals when asked about the expansion of online gambling in their state.

Strong Opposition to Online Gambling Emerges

The survey results indicated that 71% of Maryland residents opposed the introduction of online casinos. Despite the NAAiG’s clear opposition stance, the survey was conducted using credible methods. Experts, such as Jason Gumer, Executive Vice President and General Counsel of Monarch Casino & Resort, have pointed to these results as evidence that the public recognizes the risks associated with online gambling.

Initial opposition to online gambling was at 52%, but this number grew when respondents were informed that online casino games would be available at all hours. This framing appeared to highlight potential negative impacts, swaying more people against legalization.

The Inevitable Presence of Online Casinos and Their Impact

While expanding gambling options across the country has temporarily increased the number of people experiencing gambling problems, the overall percentage of individuals affected has remained relatively stable. Regulated online casinos have successfully drawn high-spending gamblers away from unregulated offshore sites, which has boosted tax revenues and funding for addiction treatment and player safety programs.

Without regulation, gambling patrons are left vulnerable to offshore platforms that lack protections, often leading to financial losses and other harms. In contrast, well-regulated operators prioritize consumer protection and contribute to resources that help individuals affected by gambling issues.
