Overview of the Case

Michael Thomas Glaspy, 53, has been sentenced to three years in prison for the manslaughter of Rodney Frenette, a manager at Casino New Brunswick in the UK. In addition to the prison sentence, Glaspy is prohibited from owning or possessing firearms for ten years.

Details Surrounding the Incident

Rodney Frenette died on March 28, 2023, in a hospital in Moncton, twenty-four days after he was assaulted at a pub inside Casino New Brunswick. The jury took about six hours to reach the verdict, finding Glaspy, who lives in Riverview, responsible for Frenette’s death.

The trial revealed that on March 4, 2023, an altercation occurred between Frenette, age 56, and Glaspy, age 53. Glaspy reportedly struck Frenette, causing him to fall and hit his head, resulting in a severe injury that ultimately led to his death. A pathologist confirmed that Frenette died due to blunt force trauma to the head, compounded by a stroke.

Trial Proceedings and Sentencing

Justice Christa Bourque of Moncton’s Court of King’s Bench considered Glaspy’s intoxication level when handing down the sentence. Glaspy admitted to not consuming alcohol since the incident and expressed remorse to Frenette’s family.

Key Trial Issues and Evidence

A critical issue during the trial was determining Glaspy’s responsibility for Frenette’s fall and the skull fracture. Evidence showed that Frenette died from head trauma and a subsequent stroke.

Before his death, Frenette had given a statement to the police describing the event at the casino. He mentioned that he had been observing Glaspy and his wife dancing, and had told Glaspy that he would no longer serve him alcohol, asking him to leave the pub. Security footage presented during the trial showed Glaspy approaching Frenette in the casino pub holding a drink and wearing a jacket.

Frenette recalled being punched by Glaspy in the pub but had no memory of events after the assault.
