Man Imprisoned After Causing Multiple Car Crash While Gambling on Phone

Accident Caused by Distracted Driving
Jack Bentley, a 30-year-old man from the UK, was recently sentenced to prison after causing a serious car accident while gambling on his phone. The collision occurred when Bentley failed to notice a stationary Nissan X-Trail in traffic, crashing into its rear and setting off a chain reaction accident involving several vehicles.
Details of the Crash and Injuries
The impact caused significant injuries, including a fractured pelvis for a pregnant woman in one of the vehicles. She required an emergency cesarean section to deliver her baby prematurely. Although the newborn initially faced severe complications, including collapsed lungs requiring intensive care, the baby eventually recovered and was able to leave the hospital.
Other victims included the driver who suffered whiplash, two children who were also injured, and the family’s dog, which needed urgent surgery from serious injuries sustained in the crash.
Bentley’s Reckless Behavior and Legal Consequences
Investigations revealed that Bentley had been driving erratically, swerving between lanes and even driving onto the grass verge along the highway. Police analysis of his phone showed he was engaging in online gambling during the entire journey. After being arrested at the scene, Bentley pled guilty to two charges of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.
He was sentenced at Derby Crown Court to 28 months in prison and received a 38-month driving ban in response to his reckless and dangerous behavior behind the wheel.
Emotional Impact on the Family
The injured mother shared how traumatic the incident was for her and her family. She described the emergency delivery as distressing, noting the pain of having her baby born prematurely without the chance for immediate bonding, as she and her partner were separated across different hospital wards during a critical time.
She expressed that no parent should experience such hardship caused by another’s careless actions on the road.
Police Statement on the Incident
PC Richard Morris from Derbyshire Police condemned Bentley’s driving as unacceptable, highlighting that the driver was distracted by his phone throughout most of the journey. The officer emphasized the lasting physical and emotional toll the incident has had on the victims, who were innocent bystanders simply going about their day when the preventable accident occurred.
