Overview of the Incident

Rigoberto Mendez Morales faces second-degree murder charges in North Dakota following his arrest for the killing of a woman in a hotel room at a well-known tribal casino in the state.

Suspect Denies Recollection of the Crime

The alleged murder occurred in a room at Sky Dancer Casino & Resort in Belcourt, where Morales is accused of fatally stabbing a woman. Morales has pleaded not guilty, maintaining that he has no memory of the events leading up to the crime.

Upon his arrest, Morales reportedly could not recall what had happened and was found sitting on a bloodstained bed next to the victim. According to an official affidavit, Morales stated he had consumed three alcoholic drinks while gambling but did not remember returning to his room or how blood ended up on his clothes and a multi-tool he possessed. He also denied any physical contact with the victim, identified only by her initials, despite seeing her motionless and covered in blood.

Due to limited English proficiency, Morales required an interpreter during his hearing in the North Dakota US District Court, which was conducted via Zoom while he remained in Ward County Jail. Morales has been denied bail, and his trial is scheduled to begin on April 14. The evidence and circumstances currently present a challenging situation for his defense.

Apprehended at the Crime Scene

Law enforcement responded to a 911 call at 6:07 AM on January 10, 2026, reporting a deceased person at the casino’s hotel. Morales was found on the bed, bloodied and with an injury to his right eye.

Authorities also discovered a multi-tool in his possession that was stained with blood. Forensic analysis revealed that hair and blood on the tool matched those of the victim, forming crucial evidence in the case against Morales.

He is being prosecuted under the Major Crimes Act, reflecting the severity of the offense committed on tribal land.
