Introduction to Responsible Gambling in Macau

Ng Wai Han, director of Macau’s Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ), has highlighted the critical importance of responsible gambling. He emphasized that it is not only vital for the sustainable and legitimate development of Macau’s gaming industry but also a legal obligation for all casino operators within the region.

Ng Wai Han Addresses a Key Responsible Gambling Event

Ng Wai Han shared these insights during the closing ceremony of the “Responsible Gambling Promotion 2025” held on December 17 at the MGM Cotai ballroom. This event was organized jointly by the Social Welfare Bureau, the DICJ, and the University of Macau’s Institute for the Study of Commercial Gaming.

At this gathering, 15 casinos and gaming venues were honored as examples of effective responsible gambling practices. Additionally, 175 participants were awarded certificates after completing professional training programs, including gambling counseling and responsible gambling instruction courses.

With Macau’s economy recovering more rapidly than initially anticipated, the gaming sector is encountering new opportunities alongside challenges. Consequently, the focus on responsible gambling has shifted from merely community awareness efforts to a firm legal requirement as stipulated in the regional Gaming Law.

Measures and Future Plans for Responsible Gambling by the DICJ

To enforce responsible gambling policies effectively, Macau authorities require regular progress reports from gaming concessionaires. These efforts are complemented by on-site audits to assess how these operators implement and manage their responsible gambling initiatives.

Ng Wai Han also described the rigorous oversight on casino entry restrictions designed to prevent problem gambling. Continuous supervision strengthens these protective measures, ensuring that operators fully comply with regulations and contribute to minimizing gambling-related harm.

Looking forward, the Macau government plans to intensify public education campaigns about responsible gambling. This will involve collaborating with various stakeholders and leveraging multiple communication platforms to increase awareness and support the prevention of gambling disorders.
