Temporary Closure Due to Severe Weather

Macau’s casinos recently paused their operations in response to Super Typhoon Ragasa. During this period, local authorities advised travelers to verify ferry and flight schedules, as disruptions were still likely.

Precautionary Measures Taken by Authorities

The Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ) swiftly convened an emergency session to address preparations for the incoming storm and to enforce safety protocols for both residents and visitors. The Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau issued Typhoon Signal No. 8, prompting casinos to ensure all guests and staff evacuated the premises within two hours.

Throughout this time, both the casinos and officials emphasized their dedication to strictly adhering to emergency procedures to safeguard everyone involved.

Operations Return to Normal After Typhoon Passes

With the typhoon now behind the region, emergency status was officially lifted following a directive from the Civil Protection Centre’s chief executive at 11 p.m. the previous night. Casinos resumed normal operations starting at 2 a.m. on September 25.

Ferry connections between Macau and Hong Kong have also restarted, with the Marine and Water Bureau recommending that passengers contact ferry companies directly to confirm schedules and tickets. Meanwhile, the Civil Aviation Authority highlighted potential flight delays and urged travelers to verify their flight times carefully.

Looking Ahead to a Strong Golden Week

With the threat of the typhoon behind them, Macau’s casino operators are focusing on preparations for the upcoming Golden Week holiday from September 29 to October 6. Industry analysts anticipate this period to be the most prosperous since the COVID-19 pandemic began.

Experts project that daily gaming revenues could reach approximately MOP 1.05 billion (about $131 million) during this time, noting that the key challenge for casinos will be maintaining this positive momentum throughout the holiday.
