NBA Considers Adding New Teams, Including Las Vegas

The NBA is evaluating the potential expansion of the league by introducing new franchises. Las Vegas is a prime candidate alongside Seattle, with a critical decision expected at the NBA Board of Governors meeting later this month. This expansion would mark the first addition of new teams in decades.

Details of the Expansion Vote and Requirements

The NBA Board of Governors is set to review a proposal that could reshape the league by adding teams in Las Vegas and Seattle. The vote is scheduled for March 24-25, and approval requires at least 23 of 30 team owners to agree. Although there is an option to approve both cities, it is possible that only one may be granted a new franchise.

If the expansion is approved, the selected team or teams are expected to join the league in the 2028-2029 season. This initial approval would open the door for potential bids, with estimated fees reaching as high as $10 billion. A subsequent vote would then confirm the final decision on the expansion.

Las Vegas Emerging as a Leading Sports Destination

While Las Vegas is traditionally recognized for its casinos, it has increasingly grown into a prominent sports city. Currently, it is home to the WNBA’s Aces, one of the league’s top-performing teams.

The city’s sports profile has expanded significantly with the addition of the NHL’s Golden Knights and the NFL’s Raiders. Furthermore, Major League Baseball’s Athletics plan to relocate to Las Vegas in 2028, further establishing the city’s role as a major sports hub.

Las Vegas also hosts the Las Vegas Grand Prix, which has quickly become an important event in the motorsports calendar, reinforcing the city’s expanding reputation in professional sports.
