Las Vegas Reports Job Growth Amid Economic Challenges in September

Job Market Shows Signs of Improvement
Despite facing a downturn in tourism, Las Vegas saw a modest increase in both consumer spending and employment in September. According to the Department of Employment, Training, and Rehabilitation, the city experienced a 0.4% rise in job numbers, reflecting a positive shift in the local economy.
Employment Gains in the Hospitality Industry
In total, about 4,400 new jobs were added during September, with the hospitality sector driving this growth by adding approximately 5,100 positions across Nevada. This suggests that Las Vegas may be moving past the most challenging phase of its recent economic struggles, with hopes that job growth will continue in the near future.
Concerns Over Consumer Confidence
However, there are still concerns to be addressed. The University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) Center for Business and Economic Research has highlighted that consumer confidence in Southern Nevada is at its lowest point since the Great Recession. This low confidence may impact the pace of economic recovery.
Tourism Trends and Visitor Numbers
Despite a slight increase in spending by consumers, visitor numbers declined in October. The city saw a 4.4% decrease in visitors compared to the same period last year, with a total of 32.3 million visitors recorded through October—a 7.6% drop from the previous year.
Mixed Economic Outlook
The outlook for Las Vegas’ economy remains cautious. The UNLV Center for Business and Economic Research describes the local economy as taking a “slowing path,” indicating ongoing challenges despite some positive developments.
Holiday Season Brings a Temporary Boost
On a brighter note, the Thanksgiving holiday provided a welcome lift to local tourism, with an increase in visitors during this period. According to Stacey Barber, Vice President of Travel at AAA, Thanksgiving travel consistently shows strong numbers as many people use the holiday to travel and spend time with family.
