Kick Streaming Service Debuts on Xbox, Sparking Debate Over Partnership and Content

Kick Streaming App Appears on Xbox Without Official Collaboration
A new streaming application associated with the growing platform Kick has recently surfaced on Xbox consoles. This development indicates a shift in Microsoft’s approach to its gaming devices, positioning them as more than just game-focused hardware.
No Formal Partnership Between Kick and Microsoft Despite Speculation
Following a teasing social media post by Kick suggesting a potential collaboration with Xbox, many speculated about a formal partnership between the two. However, Microsoft clarified that there is no official agreement in place. The company explained that Kick independently published its app onto the Xbox platform, and Xbox is currently reviewing it to ensure compliance with its store policies. Apps not meeting these standards may be removed.
Kick’s availability on Xbox places it alongside established streaming services like Twitch and YouTube, which already offer apps on both Xbox and PlayStation consoles. While users can watch live streams from their consoles, it remains uncertain whether broadcasting directly from Xbox will be supported.
Xbox is actively seeking to expand its ecosystem amid slower sales of the Series X and Series S models, partially due to price increases and subscription changes. As part of this strategy, Xbox is being marketed as a comprehensive entertainment platform—not just a gaming device. Adding diverse media applications aligns perfectly with this vision.
Kick Faces Controversy Over Content and Platform Policies
Kick has gained a reputation as a haven for creators facing restrictions elsewhere, largely because it maintains more lenient rules and permits content related to gambling. The founders of Kick also operate the gambling site Stake, which has contributed to criticism given the tightening regulations on such content by other platforms. For example, Twitch banned most gambling streams in 2022 following multiple scandals.
Despite opposition, Kick has attracted prominent internet personalities by offering more favorable revenue sharing and fewer restrictions, carving out its niche in the competitive livestreaming market. Supporters appreciate Kick’s creator-centric approach, while critics worry less oversight could encourage inappropriate conduct.
Currently, Kick’s spot on Xbox is provisional as Microsoft thoroughly evaluates the app. Whether Kick remains on the console or is removed will depend on how well it adheres to Xbox’s content guidelines and whether users embrace it as an additional way to watch live streams from their devices.
