Japan is advancing its campaign against illegal gambling while preparing for the opening of MGM Osaka, the first of three upcoming integrated casino resorts. Although the country is embracing physical casinos, it continues to enforce strict laws against online gambling.

Officer Resignation Sparks Public Attention

In a recent high-profile case, a police officer from Kanagawa Prefecture admitted to placing online bets, both off and during work hours. Initially disciplined with a salary reduction, the officer eventually resigned after confirming his involvement in illegal wagering.

The officer reportedly wagered approximately 2.5 million yen (around $17,000) across 500 bets, 120 of which occurred while he was on duty. His justification was a misguided belief that gambling could be an easy way to earn money. This incident highlights Japan’s rare approach of penalizing individuals who engage in online gambling themselves, not just the operators.

Authorities Reinforce Anti-Gambling Measures

Investigation by the Inspector General’s Office revealed details about the officer’s motivations and prior introduction to online casinos through a university acquaintance. The office acknowledged the negative impact of his actions on public trust and issued a formal apology to the community.

They also pledged to enhance training and education for law enforcement personnel. This event underscores Japan‘s commitment to combat illegal gambling by focusing efforts on citizens involved in such activities and increasing public awareness about the legal and financial risks of gambling.
