Japanese Celebrities Face Charges in Ongoing Illegal Gambling Crackdown

Japan Intensifies Efforts Against Illegal Online Gambling
Japan continues to vigorously enforce laws against illegal online gambling, targeting anyone involved, from public figures to regular citizens. Authorities remain determined to hold accountable those who participate in gambling activities on casino or sports betting websites.
Two More Celebrities Named in the Gambling Investigation
Recently, two comedians, Asahi Saito and Hiroshi Sano, known collectively as Butter Young, were implicated in illegal gambling activities. Prosecutors allege that the duo placed bets through overseas online casinos, which is illegal in Japan regardless of whether individuals operate or sponsor such sites.
The comedians were first identified by their agency, Titan, which reported their gambling to the police along with others found to have broken the law. Japanese law enforcement has made a point of publicly revealing the names of those caught gambling illegally abroad, aiming to increase public awareness and emphasise that everyone is subject to prosecution.
Though it may seem unusual to pursue individuals solely for placing bets overseas, Japan strictly enforces these regulations as part of its commitment to upholding the law.
Authorities Encourage Voluntary Admissions to Avoid Severe Penalties
Earlier this month, Japanese officials showed leniency towards professional baseball players who voluntarily admitted to illegal gambling, thereby avoiding prosecution. This approach is intended to encourage others to come forward before they are caught.
In a separate case, a Tokyo resident was arrested after wagering an unprecedented total of around $194 million online. The 38-year-old claimed ignorance of the illegality of his actions, but his case underscores the authorities’ resolve to crack down on major offenders.
