Early Signs of Youth Gambling and Associated Risks
Reports have revealed that children and teenagers as young as 15 years old express a strong urge to obtain money to continue gambling online. In one notable incident, a young boy was arrested after defrauding a man of $8,800 through a romance scam. Instances of impersonation were also observed, where the boy posed as a female college student to deceive over 30 men and extract various amounts of money.
Increasing Prevalence of Gambling Addiction Among Minors
A startling case involved a 13-year-old boy who had been engaging in online casino gambling since elementary school. The number of young individuals facing gambling problems has steadily risen. Government efforts are underway to crackdown on these online activities.
Statistics Highlight Vulnerability of Young Gamblers
According to the National Police Agency, an estimated 3.37 million Japanese currently gamble at offshore online casinos, with approximately 180,000 being between 10 and 19 years old. The habits formed during these formative years can lead to compulsive gambling and poor self-control, resulting in severe financial difficulties and increased risk of mental health issues, including suicidal ideation.
Serious Concerns Regarding Addiction Among Underage Gamblers
The National Police Agency reported that 70% of minors interviewed admitted to being addicted to gambling. Toshiaki Tsuneoka, an associate professor at Showa Medical University, emphasized the dangers, noting that the ease of access to online gambling via smartphones increases the risk of addiction going unnoticed by parents. He called for enhanced efforts to raise awareness and promote treatment options through medical care and support groups.
