Israel Police Shut Down Illegal Cockfighting Operation and Arrest Three Individuals

Illegal Cockfighting Ring Dismantled by Israeli Authorities
Israeli law enforcement recently intervened to stop an unlawful cockfighting operation, arresting three suspects involved in the illegal activity. The operation involved forcing roosters to fight while spectators placed bets on the outcomes, constituting both animal cruelty and illegal gambling.
Rescue of 150 Roosters from Confined Conditions
The hidden cockfighting venue was discovered in a farming area near Ness Ziona. The Israel Police were alerted by a tip-off regarding suspected mistreatment of animals at the location, which led to a coordinated investigation.
The Rehovot police collaborated with the Environmental Protection Ministry, the Agriculture and Food Security Ministry, and a local veterinarian to examine the site. Their inquiry revealed clear evidence of deliberate animal abuse linked to unlawful wagering, resulting in a police raid.
During the raid, the property’s owner as well as two foreign nationals were taken into custody. Authorities also freed approximately 150 roosters that had been kept in cramped cages within an agricultural facility. Photographs from the scene showed numerous cages and seating arrangements likely intended for bettors watching the fights.
This incident adds to previous crackdowns in Israel where similar illegal cockfighting operations were uncovered in 2018 and 2022. These earlier cases also involved foreign nationals organizing prohibited cockfighting events despite legal restrictions.
Impact of Gaza Conflict on Gambling Problems in Israel
In related developments, recent findings from the Israel Center for Addiction and Mental Health at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem indicate an increase in problematic gambling behavior since the escalation of tensions during the Gaza conflict.
The study emphasized that men who struggle to regulate their emotions are more vulnerable to developing gambling issues. It also pointed out that individuals who exert considerable effort to process their feelings may turn to gambling as a coping mechanism or a way to manage emotional distress.
