Interpol Pursues Philippine Gambling Tycoon Charlie Ang

International Search for a Gambling Tycoon
Philippine authorities are intensifying efforts to locate Charlie “Atong” Ang, a well-known businessman in the country’s gambling scene, who is now the subject of an Interpol Red Notice. This international alert is part of a broader campaign to find Ang, who is suspected of being involved in serious criminal activities.
Suspected Role in Multiple Disappearances
The 68-year-old gambling magnate is the main suspect linked to the disappearance of at least 34 individuals between 2021 and 2022. These individuals were reportedly participants in cockfighting, locally referred to as “sabungeros.” The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) initiated the request for the international alert earlier this year to aid in tracking him down.
Continued Search and Increased Rewards
Despite conducting ten search operations recently, the whereabouts of Ang remain unknown. DILG Secretary Juanito Victor Remulla has highlighted the seriousness of the situation, noting that Ang is believed to be armed and dangerous. Consequently, the reward for information leading to his arrest has been doubled from PHP 10 million (approximately $172,700) to PHP 20 million (around $345,200).
Charges and Alleged Movements
Ang faces multiple arrest warrants with charges including kidnapping, serious illegal detention, and kidnapping with homicide, all relating to the missing cockfighting participants. While rumors have circulated that he may have fled to countries like Cambodia, intelligence suggests that he is still within the Philippines.
Law Enforcement Measures and Public Involvement
The nationwide manhunt includes the establishment of hotlines for tips, community involvement, and coordinated raids. The addition of the Interpol Red Notice brings a global dimension to the search, enabling law enforcement agencies worldwide to detain Ang if found, pending extradition.
Background and Current Situation
Charlie Ang has previously been in the public eye. Former President Rodrigo Duterte reportedly referred to him as the leading gambler in his hometown and even enlisted his assistance to tackle illegal gambling. In 2000, Ang was involved in a political scandal linked to former President Joseph Estrada, who was accused of channeling gambling funds, an event that eventually led to Estrada’s impeachment.
While Ang remains at large, twenty of his co-accused, including past and present police officers, are currently in custody. Authorities stress that capturing Ang remains a top priority, framing the search as a crucial national law enforcement operation with significant stakes and wide public interest.
