Background of the Investigation

Law enforcement agencies in the Greater Toronto Area have successfully dismantled several illegal gambling operations after conducting an extensive year-long investigation. This effort resulted in nine individuals facing charges and the confiscation of numerous assets.

Details of Project Scala

The investigation, known as Project Scala, was launched in early 2024 by the York Regional Police in collaboration with South Simcoe Police. The focus was on illegal gambling venues in Vaughan and Toronto, where authorities were able to identify and monitor suspects involved in collecting profits from these underground activities.

A significant development occurred on January 22, when law enforcement executed search warrants at multiple sites associated with the illicit operations. These included three residential properties and three gambling establishments located in Vaughan and Toronto. Additionally, police searched a commercial business, a storage unit, and two vehicles within Toronto.

Seizures and Evidence Collected

During the raids, officers seized a variety of items including video gaming machines and related equipment. They also confiscated unlawful tobacco products, alcohol, a cryptocurrency wallet, a substantial amount of cash, silver bars and coins, two vehicles, and an unspecified quantity of controlled substances.

Charges and Legal Proceedings

Following the operation, nine individuals from various parts of southern Ontario, including Cambridge, Innisfil, Toronto, Tottenham, and Vaughan, have been charged. The accused, ranging in age from 27 to 70, face a collective total of 22 charges related to illegal gambling. Authorities stress that all individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Community Impact and Call for Public Assistance

Investigators highlight that illegal gambling often correlates with additional criminal activities and poses threats to community safety. These cases frequently depend on public tips, thorough surveillance, and financial investigations. Authorities encourage members of the community to provide any relevant information to the Major Projects Unit or anonymously through Crime Stoppers to aid ongoing efforts against illegal gambling.
