Global Health Professionals Unite to Combat Gambling Addiction

The growing popularity of sports betting and online gambling has triggered a significant increase in addiction rates worldwide. In response, over 300 health professionals have come together to call on governments, regulatory bodies, and international organizations to confront what they describe as a crisis affecting many communities.

Addressing Gambling Harm: Focus on Vulnerable Populations

These experts have published a comprehensive article highlighting the challenges posed by widespread access to gambling platforms. As gambling opportunities become more accessible, a rising number of individuals meet the criteria for gambling disorders. This initiative, led by Professor Zsolt Demetrovics from Flinders University, emphasizes the need for targeted strategies beyond the initial 35 countries involved in this collaboration.

The group stresses the importance of prioritizing support for vulnerable and minority communities, particularly young people, who research shows are at a greater risk of experiencing harm from gambling compared to their peers who do not face similar disadvantages.

Professor Demetrovics stated, “Gambling poses an increasing public health challenge, yet there is currently no clear guidance for focusing research efforts. Priorities should include early intervention, adoption of evidence-based policies, and effective treatment programs to address problem gambling.”

The authors also advocate for a universal framework to prevent gambling-related harm, which can be adapted to suit specific regions and demographic groups through customized treatment approaches.

The team is actively working to define key priorities for advancing their mission. They intend to rely heavily on data and empirical evidence to shape their policies and interventions, ensuring that their strategies are both effective and impactful.

Professor Demetrovics highlighted the constraints in funding and research resources, emphasizing the necessity of focusing on the most urgent questions to adequately support stakeholders, including academics, policymakers, and funding agencies.
