Increasing Numbers Seek Help for Gambling-Related Financial Problems

GamCare, a prominent UK charity focused on gambling support, has reported a significant rise in financial difficulties among individuals affected by gambling. In 2025, their Money Guidance Service (MGS) has seen unprecedented demand, underscoring the growing challenge problem gambling presents.

The Role and Impact of the Money Guidance Service

The Money Guidance Service was created to fill a crucial gap by offering expert financial advice tailored to those suffering gambling-related harm. It supports people in regaining control over their finances while addressing harmful gambling behaviors. Following successful initial trials in the East Midlands and Yorkshire & the Humber, the service has proven its effectiveness.

Since the start of the year, the MGS has received 1,151 referrals, exceeding the total number for the entire previous year of 2024. August alone recorded 198 new clients, marking the highest monthly intake since the service began in 2023.

“Our team is available to support anyone uncertain about the financial effects gambling may have on themselves or someone close to them.”

The service has made a significant difference for many, with clients reporting lowered debts, improved budgeting, and enhanced financial steadiness. Despite this progress, new data reveals that those entering support this year carry debts exceeding A35.3 million, almost doubling last year’s figures, with an average debt of A34,682 per person.

The Urgency of Early Financial Intervention

GamCare emphasizes the seriousness of certain cases, including incidents where individuals have misappropriated business funds to finance their gambling, accumulating debts that run into millions. Some clients also rely on gambling hopes to pay everyday expenses, a situation made even more alarming amidst ongoing economic pressures.

“While many gamble responsibly, we do not recommend gambling as a means to cover essential living costs.”

Besides helping manage debt, the MGS has assisted clients in claiming over A360,000 of previously unclaimed benefits this year, providing crucial financial relief. Wade noted that a considerable portion of those seeking assistance are younger men who mistakenly believe quick profits can be made through gambling or cryptocurrency trading.

“It is common for people battling gambling problems to feel as though the money they wager is not real.”

GamCare also runs the National Gambling Helpline, available 24/7 as an essential resource for individuals in gambling crises. With demand for services reaching historic highs, the charity strongly encourages those affected, either personally or through loved ones, to seek help early. According to Wade, early intervention is critical in preventing the escalation of gambling-related harm.
