Gambling in the Military: Kindbridge Launches Initiative to Address Gambling-Related Harm
The Kindbridge Research Institute (KRI) has introduced a new program in Colorado aimed at reducing gambling-related problems among active military personnel and their families.
Addressing Gambling Challenges Within the Military
The initiative, named Stigma Stand Down, targets active-duty service members, helping them build the resilience needed to manage and overcome gambling-related difficulties. The program also extends support to veterans and families of military members, recognizing that gambling issues often affect more than just the individual.
Gambling addiction frequently disrupts family relationships and complicates efforts for loved ones to assist in recovery, a challenge the institute identifies as critical to tackle.
Research indicates that the prevalence of gambling disorders among military personnel is approximately 3.5 times higher than that of civilians, highlighting an urgent need for dedicated resources and interventions.
One contributing factor is the widespread presence of slot machines on military bases both within the United States and internationally. This environment makes it difficult for service members to avoid gambling, especially those already struggling with addiction, as deployment often limits their options for seeking help or escape.
Kindbridge Research Institute emphasized the importance of combating stigma, describing it as a hidden adversary that isolates service members and veterans while impacting their families, units, and overall mission readiness.
Strategically, the program launch was timed close to the start of the football season, a period marked by increased gambling advertisements and promotions, in order to mitigate temptations and provide timely support to those at risk.
The Military’s Role in Supporting At-Risk Personnel
In collaboration with Kindbridge Behavioral Health, the institute offers free therapy sessions to military members and their families who are vulnerable or struggling with compulsive gambling behaviors.
To enhance data collection and guide effective support strategies, the Kindbridge Behavioral Institute developed the Gambling Self-Check tool. This survey quickly assesses individuals’ gambling addiction levels, helping to identify those in need of assistance.
Mark Lucia, director of programming at Kindbridge, described Stigma Stand Down as a proactive effort to remove shame and provide confidential, evidence-based care tailored to the unique realities of military life. He applauded current partners and encouraged more organizations to join the cause in strengthening communities and transforming lives.
