GambleAware Introduces Innovative App to Promote Safer Gambling Habits

Introducing the GambleAware Support Tool
GambleAware has launched a new digital application aimed at reducing gambling-related harm, with a particular focus on young adults aged 18 to 24. This free and confidential app supports users in managing their gambling behaviors independently, catering especially to those who prefer not to engage immediately with formal treatment services. Data from GambleAware’s 2024 Treatment and Support Survey reveals that this age group is keen on self-regulation, making the app a timely and valuable resource.
Fostering Self-Awareness and Harm Prevention
The GambleAware Support Tool acts as a bridge between mere self-awareness and professional assistance. It offers features such as setting personalized goals, tracking spending, delivering motivational reminders, and providing customized advice based on the individual’s risk level. For many young users, saving money and improving emotional well-being are primary motivations for reducing gambling activities. These insights are crucial for enhancing harm prevention strategies.
According to Alexia Clifford, GambleAware’s Chief Communications Officer, gambling addiction often develops through subtle patterns that gradually intensify. The app is designed to offer timely insights to help users reduce or stop gambling before it escalates.
Evidence-Based Guidelines Underpin the App
The app’s recommendations are based on internationally recognized Lower Risk Gambling Guidelines, derived from extensive research involving over 60,000 participants across eight countries. These guidelines suggest spending no more than one percent of one’s monthly income on gambling, limiting gambling to no more than four days per month, and participating in a maximum of two types of gambling activities.
User Control and Empowerment
Users input their gambling frequency and expenditure into the app, which then translates the information into clear, actionable insights. Rather than issuing warnings, the app provides gentle reminders and easy-to-understand data to help users set achievable limits that align with safer gambling practices.
Beyond data tracking, the app includes educational materials, podcasts, personal stories, and reflections from others who have faced similar challenges. It also offers links to additional support services, including GambleAware’s helpline and service finder, for those seeking further assistance.
Positive Impact on Users
Catherine Adams, a member of the GambleAware Lived Experience Council, shared her experience: “I used to gamble on the computer from evening until early morning, which disrupted my sleep. Being able to monitor my progress myself has been positive and helped me reduce or quit gambling.”
Supporting Wider Efforts to Reduce Gambling Harm
The introduction of this app complements GambleAware’s ongoing mission to provide accessible, non-judgmental support to millions of people in the UK who wish to gamble less. A 2023 report highlighted that over four million adults want to cut down on gambling, yet fewer than 10% seek professional help. The GambleAware Support Tool offers an approachable option to encourage safer gambling habits among this population.
