The Galileo Observatory, engineered under the guidance of Harvard astrophysicist Avi Loeb, is perched atop the Sphere to observe unusual aerial phenomena. Avi Loeb, a distinguished professor at Harvard’s Center for Astrophysics, designed the system to focus on identifying and analyzing what are now referred to as Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAPs), commonly known as UFOs.
How the Observatory Tracks Aerial Objects
The observatory uses ultra-high resolution optical and infrared cameras that feed data into artificial intelligence systems. This technology eliminates human bias and accelerates the analysis process. Furthermore, the observatory’s data is triangulated with observations from two other discreetly located facilities approximately 10 kilometers away within Las Vegas. This allows accurate measurements of an object’s velocity, acceleration, and distance from Earth.
Project Approval and Launch
The project received formal approval in September 2024, following a significant meeting between Sphere Entertainment’s CEO and Avi Loeb. Remarkably, the observatory came online simultaneously with the debut of “The Wizard of Oz” immersive show at the Sphere. This serendipitous timing allows visitors to enjoy the magic of fictional worlds below, while scientists actively explore real unexplained mysteries above.
Scope and Aspirations of the Galileo Observatory
The team aims to analyze data from millions of aerial objects annually to identify potential UAPs over Las Vegas. Although Avi Loeb has faced skepticism within the scientific community for proposing extraterrestrial explanations for some phenomena, he remains committed to his pioneering work.
