France Introduces Digital Self-Exclusion Registry for Gamblers

France Launches Online Gambling Self-Exclusion System
France has rolled out a new digital self-exclusion registry aimed at helping individuals who struggle with gambling-related issues to limit their betting activities more conveniently.
This move supports the efforts of l’Autorité Nationale des Jeux to reduce the harms caused by excessive gambling, making protective tools more accessible to the public.
Easy Online Registration for Self-Exclusion
Gamblers seeking to limit their participation no longer need to visit a physical office. Instead, they can complete the self-exclusion process quickly online through the dedicated website.
The process involves identity verification using IDnow, allowing users to register themselves onto the exclusion list which applies to all licensed gambling operators in France. Despite this progress, illegal gambling platforms continue to pose challenges by operating without regulation.
Self-exclusion registrations have seen significant growth, with around 85,000 people currently signed up. Since 2021, there has been a marked increase of 40,000 new registrations, highlighting the positive impact of digitalizing the system and removing the need for in-person paperwork.
Upcoming Features and User Empowerment
The current demographic data shows that 23% of those enrolled are young adults aged 18 to 24, and 77% are men, indicating certain groups are more affected by gambling problems than others.
The authorities plan to enhance the registry further by adding features that allow users to access relevant documents, monitor their exclusion status, and request removal from the list after a specified period.
It is important to note that any removal requests can only be made after a mandatory minimum exclusion period of three years.
