Surachate Hakparn, formerly the deputy national police chief of Thailand, has brought forward serious allegations involving corruption within the country’s police force. He claims that more than 30 police officers received payments from online gambling networks, highlighting a troubling issue of bribery and misconduct.

Surachate presented evidence during a lengthy testimony before a parliamentary committee chaired by Rangsiman Rome, a Member of Parliament and Deputy Leader of the People’s Party. The documents reveal suspicious financial transactions connected to the Police Cyber Taskforce, a special unit responsible for tackling online gambling crimes.
The evidence links some payments to a current Member of Parliament and indicates that certain officers underwent numerous transactions. One senior officer, nicknamed “Big T,” reportedly had over 100 transfers directed to his close associates. Notably, no disciplinary actions appear to have been taken against those involved, raising concerns about selective enforcement within the police system.
Calls for Accountability and Response from Authorities
Surachate submitted this evidence as a concerned citizen demanding justice and institutional reform. He had initially reported the matter to the National Police Chief, Kitrat Phanphet, months earlier but saw no response, prompting him to escalate the issue to the parliamentary level.
In addressing criticisms, Surachate clarified that his previous comment labeling the police as “the biggest criminal organisation” targeted only a corrupt minority and did not reflect on the entire police force of approximately 200,000 officers. He accused the National Police Chief of attempting to sideline him following these revelations, insisting his goal is to expose wrongdoing rather than discredit law enforcement as a whole. The National Police Chief declined to comment on the allegations.
Parliamentary Commission’s Investigation
The parliamentary commission, led by Rangsiman Rome, is actively investigating the police force for systemic corruption and the connections between corrupt officials, politicians, and illicit financial transfers. Efforts include tracing payments, summoning implicated personnel, and scrutinizing political links. The absence of direct representation from the National Police Office during these proceedings was seen as a barrier to transparency.

Recently, Thailand has seen a tougher approach from politicians regarding gambling. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has publicly expressed his firm opposition to gambling legalization, pledging to block any casino legalization efforts.
