Background on the Embezzlement Case

Thomas Tonar, a 61-year-old former employee from Sun Valley, received a 30-year prison sentence after admitting to embezzling more than $700,000 from Dotty’s casinos. During his employment, Tonar had access to lucrative benefits such as paid time off, a 401(k) plan, and health insurance.

Details of the Sentence

Tonar was sentenced to 20 consecutive years in prison for four counts of embezzling more than $100,000 each. Additionally, he received 2 to 10 years for embezzling an amount less than $100,000. Overall, his prison term will range between 8 and 30 years, with eligibility for parole after serving the initial 8 years. This sentencing was announced by the Washoe County District Attorney’s Office and issued by Judge Barry Breslow.

Discovery and Investigation of the Theft

After signs of theft emerged, Dotty’s management alerted both the Sparks and Reno police departments. Surveillance footage captured Tonar taking money from multiple Dotty’s casino locations. Although it remains unclear why he had access to the storage areas holding the funds, a thorough investigation involving the casinos’ accounting teams revealed that Tonar had stolen a total of $714,713.59.

Impact on Those Affected

Tonar’s theft has had widespread consequences, with many victims struggling financially. Some affected individuals have reported falling behind on rent and mortgage payments as a result of the embezzlement.

Capture and Arrest

Following a police search, Tonar was found hiding in a motel in Sacramento, California. Law enforcement officers from local agencies executed a warrant and discovered Tonar in possession of approximately $670,000 in stolen cash. In addition to the money, three firearms were also recovered at the motel.

Confession and Aftermath

Tonar has yet to provide a clear explanation for his actions, despite knowing the security measures in place at Dotty’s casinos. He ultimately admitted to stealing from six different Dotty’s establishments, confirming the extent of his crimes.
