Entertainment Community Fund Opposes Times Square Casino Proposal

Entertainment Community Fund Raises Concerns Over Casino Impact on Times Square
The Entertainment Community Fund, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting professionals in the performing arts and entertainment sectors, recently joined the No Times Square Casino Coalition. This coalition actively opposes the proposed casino project planned for Times Square. The Fund expressed significant concerns about the potential negative impact such a development could have on the heart of New York’s theater district.
Leadership Voices Worries About Safety and Community Disruption
Joseph P. Benincasa, the president and CEO of the Entertainment Community Fund, stated that the organization’s board stands firmly against the casino proposal. They believe the casino could jeopardize public safety and disrupt the livelihoods of theater workers and local businesses that thrive in the neighborhood. Benincasa emphasized that Times Square’s success largely depends on its vibrant arts and cultural environment, which the casino could undermine.
Coalition of Local Groups United Against Casino Development
Established in 2023, the No Times Square Casino Coalition unites a diverse group of stakeholders including labor unions, theater organizations, business owners, and community advocates. The coalition opposes the construction of a casino at 1515 Broadway and has grown to include 35 member organizations. Prominent members include the Broadway League, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, and the Shubert Organization, alongside various unions representing stagehands, costume designers, and other theater professionals.
Community Concerns Highlight Threats to Arts and Safety
The addition of the Entertainment Community Fund to the coalition strengthens efforts to keep Times Square focused on arts and culture rather than gambling. Coalition members warn that the casino could increase crime rates, deter tourists and theater audiences, and harm the neighborhood’s reputation as a world-class entertainment destination. Local restaurants and retail stores fear economic losses, while residents are concerned about worsening traffic and safety conditions.
Broadway League Supports Coalition’s Mission
Jason Laks, head of the Broadway League, expressed support for the Entertainment Community Fund’s involvement, noting that it reinforces the coalition’s commitment to preserving the unique character of Times Square and protecting its community.
Casino Proposal Has Backers Despite Community Resistance
Despite the growing opposition, the casino project still has its supporters. Caesars Entertainment, SL Green Realty, and Roc Nation have partnered to pursue this development. Some hotel operators and property owners believe the casino could provide an economic boost to the area.
State Review and Competitive Landscape
The New York State Gaming Facilities Location Board is currently reviewing bids for three downstate casino licenses, including the Times Square proposal. Although community resistance presents a significant challenge, industry experts consider this project among the more competitive submissions under evaluation.
