Recognized as a pioneer in promoting gender balance, Empire City Casino stands out with nearly half of its leadership positions held by women. This surpasses the gaming industry’s average where women occupy about 25% of senior managerial roles. The casino’s leadership team features accomplished women including human resources executive director Danette Jordon-Woods, slot operations shift manager Theresa Tirado, income control supervisor Althea Esty, and director of surveillance Karen Delago.
Empowering Women Through Growth and Development
Danette Jordon-Woods began her journey at Empire City Casino in 2006 as an employment and training manager. She played a vital role in the casino’s transition under MGM Resorts ownership in 2019 and believes the venue fosters significant growth opportunities for women and all employees.
Theresa Tirado started in the food and beverage department in 2007 before advancing to a leadership role in slot operations. She highlights the many developmental opportunities provided by MGM Resorts, which have supported her career advancement.
Althea Esty moved to the United States as a teenager and began her gaming career in 2004 as a horseman’s bookkeeper at Yonkers Raceway. Progressing through various positions, she now oversees the casino’s income control, attributing her growth to company initiatives like mentorship and career development programs.
Karen Delago has contributed to Empire City Casino for nearly 15 years, starting as a surveillance operator. Through dedication and strong leadership qualities, she rose to become the director of surveillance, leading the venue’s security efforts. She credits the casino’s culture for empowering employees to achieve success.
