EGBA to Revise Anti-Money Laundering Guidelines in 2026

EGBA to Revise Anti-Money Laundering Guidelines in 2026
The European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA) has announced plans to update its anti-money laundering (AML) guidelines in 2026. This revision follows insights gained from the evaluation of its second annual AML report, aiming to strengthen the framework for combating financial crime in the online gambling sector.
Current Guidelines and Their Purpose
Initially released in March 2023, the EGBA AML guidelines provide detailed, sector-specific recommendations to online gambling operators. These guidelines cover crucial AML processes such as risk assessment of customers and businesses, due diligence procedures, reporting suspicious transactions, and maintaining proper records. They embrace a risk-based methodology aligned with both European Union and Financial Action Task Force (FATF) standards, while also considering the distinct challenges faced by the online gambling industry that may be less familiar to AML regulators.
Ongoing Efforts to Improve AML Compliance
This upcoming update represents the second year of EGBA’s continuous monitoring and commitment to enhancing AML compliance throughout Europe’s online gambling market. Dr. Ekaterina Hartmann, EGBA’s Director of Legal and Regulatory Affairs, emphasized the association’s goal of elevating compliance standards among its members. By setting a strong example, EGBA hopes to inspire other operators in the industry to adopt these rigorous measures. The association also encourages non-member operators to participate and contribute to strengthening the fight against financial crime within the sector.
Expected Enhancements in the 2026 Update
Details on the revised guidelines will be released closer to 2026. However, EGBA has revealed that the new version will feature expanded guidance on several key areas including risk assessments, payment processes, outsourcing, and maintaining sports integrity. The revisions will continue to apply a risk-based perspective, ensuring that AML and counter-terrorism financing actions are proportionate to the risk levels identified in the current operational environment.
