Decision to Demolish East Cannery Casino

Boyd Gaming, the owner of the Eastside Cannery Casino, has officially approved the demolition of the aging casino building. This structure was originally built on the site of the former Nevada Palace following its tear down.

Currently, Boyd Gaming is shifting focus away from the Eastside Cannery, planning to sell the land after the demolition is completed. The site is expected to be repurposed for residential development in the future.

A spokesperson from Boyd Gaming stated, “We are presently in talks to sell this location for housing purposes.”

Closure and Operational Status

The Eastside Cannery Casino has remained shuttered since the COVID-19 lockdown began in early 2020 and has not welcomed visitors since. More than five years have elapsed since its closure, without any indication of reopening.

Although the casino’s gaming license was renewed in 2024, the facility has stayed closed. Instead, Boyd Gaming has directed visitors to their nearby Sam’s Town Casino, which has absorbed much of the Eastside Cannery’s former clientele.

Boyd Gaming representatives explained the prolonged closure by noting, “After over five years of closure, there is insufficient market demand to justify reopening the Eastside Cannery.”

Background of the Eastside Cannery Casino

Boyd Gaming acquired Cannery Casino Resorts in 2016, which included the Eastside Cannery Casino as well as another property, the Cannery Casino and Hotel in North Las Vegas. Notably, their northern property is recognized for its unique World War II-era cannery theme.

Construction of the Eastside Cannery began in 2007, and the casino officially opened to the public in 2008.

Other Casino Closures in the Industry

Boyd Gaming is not alone in having to shut down casino operations. Red Rock Resorts also faced similar challenges, selling off three properties—Fiesta Henderson, Fiesta Rancho, and Texas Station—all of which have since been demolished.

Additionally, Golden Entertainment’s Colorado Belle casino remains closed and has not reopened since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.
