Denmark’s Minister for Taxation, Rasmus Stoklund, has called for stronger regulations in the gambling sector due to growing concerns about the impact of gambling on citizens. It’s estimated that around 500,000 Danes face some level of gambling-related challenges, while approximately 60,000 have taken steps to limit their gambling through the national self-exclusion program.

Rising Gambling-Related Issues in Denmark

The Danish government is considering tightening gambling regulations, shifting from a primarily lenient and specific approach toward more comprehensive control over the industry.

Introducing Stricter Advertising Restrictions

One notable proposal is to implement a ban on gambling advertisements during major sporting events, a measure inspired by policies in the United Kingdom. This “whistle-to-whistle” ban aims to reduce exposure to gambling promotions at times when audiences are most engaged with sports.

A Unified Legislative Effort to Protect Consumers

Minister Stoklund emphasizes that effective and lasting solutions require collaboration among lawmakers to develop an updated regulatory framework focused on safeguarding individuals from gambling-related harm.

He cautions that gambling problems can have far-reaching effects not only on those who gamble but also on their loved ones, friendships, and social circles. Stoklund highlights the urgency of addressing this growing issue through sound political initiatives.

Crackdown on Illegal Gambling Operators

Earlier in the year, Danish authorities took decisive action by blocking 178 illegal gambling websites, demonstrating their commitment to curb harmful practices and protect consumers from unregulated operators.
