Ongoing Dispute Over National Gambling Helpline Management

The authority over the national gambling helpline remains uncertain after a New Jersey court delayed its ruling once more. The Council on Compulsive Gambling of New Jersey (CCGNJ) announced on Friday that the decision, previously postponed, is now expected on September 22.

The Conflict Between CCGNJ and NCPG

The dispute centers on the 1-800-GAMBLER hotline, a vital resource for individuals seeking help with gambling issues. This conflict involves the CCGNJ, which has managed the program for over 40 years, and the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG), which signed a contract with the New Jersey group three years ago.

A Mercer County judge was scheduled to rule on September 3 whether to maintain a restraining order limiting NCPG’s role, initially issued in July. Should the court side with CCGNJ, the helpline would return to its previous operation before NCPG’s involvement.

Both parties agreed to what was believed to be a six-year contract last summer, although NCPG claims the agreement included a three-year renewal option. This disagreement over contract terms has contributed to the ongoing tension between the organizations.

The conflict also involves disputes over the hotline’s management, with NCPG accusing CCGNJ of failing to meet its commitments, and CCGNJ responding that callers have sometimes faced disconnections or lacked access to live operators.

Commitment to Service Integrity

CCGNJ emphasizes the importance of preserving the service’s integrity. Executive Director Luis Del Orbe expressed the group’s viewpoint, noting that 1-800-GAMBLER has been operational since 1983 and affirming their capability to manage its operations. He also reassured the public that the helpline number will continue regardless of the court’s outcome.

Del Orbe highlighted the need for enhancements to ensure that no state loses access to the helpline and that callers can engage with live representatives who provide more comprehensive information than online searches.

Both organizations recognize the necessity of keeping the helpline available. While NCPG refers to itself as a caretaker of the number, CCGNJ insists on continuing its oversight role, as it has for decades.

The final verdict on which organization will govern this crucial resource for responsible gambling support will be issued by the court on September 22.
