College Student Deported After Vegas Trip Takes a Devastating Turn

A Vacation Turned Nightmare in Las Vegas
Gabriel Espinoza, a 22-year-old college student from California who was brought to the United States from Mexico as a child, went to Las Vegas for a short vacation in January. What was meant to be a relaxing break quickly became a distressing ordeal that drastically changed his life.
The Incident That Sparked Trouble
The situation began when the Strat hotel sent an automated checkout text message. In response, someone replied with a disturbing message that said, “omfg stop before I bomb this place.” Hotel staff took the comment seriously, and as Gabriel and his friend were leaving, security detained them under suspicion of making a terrorist threat. While his friend was released, Gabriel was arrested by local police.
Escalation to ICE Involvement
Following his arrest, Las Vegas police informed Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) due to a policy enacted in January 2025 concerning foreign-born individuals. Despite having no criminal history and denying any involvement with the threatening message, Gabriel was booked by ICE and held at the Nevada Southern Detention Center for a month. Throughout this difficult time, he described feeling a deep sense of despair.
Voluntary Departure Denied and Forced Removal
Although a judge approved Gabriel’s voluntary departure, allowing him to leave the country on his own terms, ICE continued to hold him. He was transferred early one morning to a facility in Arizona without notifying his family and was eventually dropped off at the border in Nogales, Sonora, Mexico, where he was left to fend for himself.
Challenges and Lost Dreams
Gabriel was ineligible for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which offers protections to individuals brought to the U.S. illegally as children, because the program had stopped accepting new applicants before he could qualify. His vacation had also been extended by a day so a friend could experience the SkyJump bungee ride at the Strat.
Now residing in Tijuana with an aunt, Gabriel has relinquished his goal of becoming a teacher in the United States. What began as a simple celebratory trip became an unforeseen life-changing event.
