Major Expansion Plans for Salem’s Casino Facility

Churchill Downs Incorporated (CDI) has revealed ambitious plans to transform its charitable gaming site in Salem, New Hampshire. The company aims to invest up to $200 million to convert the existing venue into a state-of-the-art casino named Rockingham Grand Casino.

Significant Enlargement and New Features

The current Casino Salem spans 19,000 square feet within The Mall at Rockingham Park. However, the redevelopment will vastly increase the casino’s size to approximately 160,000 square feet, occupying three floors of the mall. This expansion will introduce a wide array of gaming options, including around 825 historical racing machines, 32 table games, and 12 electronic table game seats.

Beyond gaming, the new Rockingham Grand Casino will offer a 900-seat live entertainment venue and multiple dining and beverage outlets, making it a comprehensive entertainment complex. The project has received approval from the Salem Planning Board, with construction expected to complete by mid-2027 and costs projected between $180 million and $200 million.

Strategic Location as a Leading Mall Tenant

The redevelopment positions Rockingham Grand Casino as a principal tenant of New Hampshire’s largest shopping destination, The Mall at Rockingham Park. The casino’s proximity to the bustling Tuscan Village commercial area further enhances its appeal as a prime entertainment hub for local and regional visitors.

Leadership and Community Impact

Bill Carstanjen, CEO of Churchill Downs Incorporated, expressed enthusiasm about initiating this transformation. He emphasized the company’s commitment to supporting New Hampshire’s charitable organizations and delivering exceptional entertainment experiences to guests, especially those from the greater Boston area.

Joe Faro and Sal Lupoli, partners in the venture, also reflected optimism, highlighting their dedication to boosting the local economy by creating vibrant consumer-focused destinations.
