China Executes 11 Individuals Linked to Massive Gambling Scam

Background of the Executions
Recently, the Chinese government carried out the execution of 11 individuals convicted by a court in Zhejiang province. These people were involved in serious criminal activities, including extensive online fraud and illegal gambling operations.
Key Figures Involved
Among those executed were the primary leaders Ming Guoping and Ming Zhenzhen, along with senior members such as Zhou Weichang, Wu Hongming, and Luao Jianzhang. They were part of an infamous criminal organization operating from Myanmar, targeting both citizens in China and expatriates abroad through various scams.
Criminal Activities and Sentencing
The group faced charges not only for fraud and illegal gambling but also for more severe offenses including homicide and unlawful detention. They were sentenced in September following arrests made in 2023 by a local ethnic militia, with custody later transferred to Chinese authorities.
China’s Stance on Gambling
China has consistently maintained a strict position against gambling. The government has invested significant resources into dismantling gambling networks that harm its population. Recent actions in neighboring countries, such as the decline of the POGO sector in the Philippines, have coincided with a notable decrease in the kidnapping of Chinese nationals.
Regional Cooperation
Using its geopolitical influence, China has encouraged neighboring countries like Cambodia, Thailand, and Laos to intensify efforts against gambling operations. Despite criticism regarding its methods, China’s efforts have resulted in a drop in human trafficking cases involving its nationals. For example, Cambodia extradited billionaire businessman Chen Zhi to China on allegations of orchestrating a large cryptocurrency scam.
The Ming Crime Family’s Operations
The Ming crime family was implicated in running a $1.4 billion gambling syndicate from 2015 to 2023. The court revealed that their business activities led to at least 14 deaths among Chinese nationals, with many others affected.
Sentencing of Other Members
While 11 members were executed, over 20 other affiliates received lesser penalties. Some were sentenced to five years in prison, while others are serving life sentences for their involvement in the criminal enterprise.
