Studies indicate that in states with legalized and regulated sports betting, there is a noticeable decline in average credit scores along with increased indicators of financial stress across the general population, not limited to bettors alone. These effects are particularly intensified by the availability of mobile betting options, reflected in higher rates of bankruptcy, debt collections, and missed auto loan payments.

Data from Ohio itself aligns with these findings. For example, the United Way of Greater Cleveland reported a 277% rise in calls concerning gambling problems in the first month following legalization compared to the previous year. Official estimates suggest that approximately 255,000 Ohioans currently qualify as problem gamblers.

The public’s attitude toward gambling was further influenced by recent scandals, including a high-profile case involving two pitchers from the Cleveland Guardians. Following this incident, Governor Mike DeWine expressed regret over the decision to legalize sports betting. Breidigan also points out that the gambling industry’s extensive and high-profile marketing efforts have contributed to normalizing betting behavior. However, this portrayal can obscure the potential dangers, leading many individuals to encounter serious difficulties before realizing the risks.
