Catena Media Co-Founder Teams Up with MrBeast to Uncover $1.25 Million Scam

The Rise and Setback of Erik Bergman
Erik Bergman, a key figure behind the success of Catena Media, helped transform the company from a small affiliate startup into a thriving business valued at $200 million with a workforce exceeding 300 employees. Despite his extensive experience in online sports betting and casino gaming, Bergman recently faced an unexpected and costly setback. This difficult chapter, however, has strengthened his resolve to protect others from similar fraudulent schemes.
A Sophisticated Scam Exploiting Trusted Connections
Bergman publicly shared his story of being defrauded of $1.25 million by a complex scam that took advantage of his previous collaboration with YouTube sensation Jimmy Donaldson, widely known as MrBeast. Instead of suffering in silence, Bergman chose to reveal the details to warn other businesspeople, philanthropists, and cryptocurrency enthusiasts.
The fraud began innocuously: after donating $1.2 million to MrBeast’s #TeamSeas campaign and establishing a rapport with Donaldson and his team, Bergman eagerly supported a new initiative named “Team Water” with a $1 million pledge. Soon after, he was added to what appeared to be a private donor group chat featuring notable personalities such as Mark Rober, Shopify co-founder Tobi Lütke, and Stake co-founder Ed Craven. The group interactions, complete with casual voice messages and planning discussions, seemed authentic.
Within this circle, Bergman was invited to participate in a highly promising cryptocurrency investment linked to the respected Coinbase exchange. Succumbing to peer influence and the desire to keep pace with other donors, he transferred $1.25 million to the provided crypto wallets. However, inconsistencies in conversations soon raised suspicion, prompting him to contact Donaldson directly. The devastating revelation followed: the entire donor group was fabricated, identities were faked, and the funds had vanished.
A Public Warning and Collective Effort for Justice
Refusing to conceal his experience, Bergman took to social media platform X to share his story, attracting over four million views within days. Many sympathized and related to his experience, admitting they too had fallen prey to scams but never spoke out due to fear of embarrassment. This silence often allows scammers to operate freely. Bergman’s transparency sparked a surprising response.
MrBeast himself joined forces to assist, offering a $100,000 reward for leads that could lead to identifying or locating the fraudsters involved. Bergman made the entire chat history, cryptocurrency wallet details, and the phone numbers used publicly available through his charity website Great.com, encouraging a communal investigation in the hopes of recovery and deterrence.
Learning from Loss and Raising Awareness
While Bergman acknowledges he is unlikely to recover the lost $1.25 million, he regards this as a costly but invaluable lesson. Leveraging MrBeast’s massive audience, he aims to increase vigilance around financial dealings, especially those promoted by influencers.
He advises everyone to stay focused when making large financial commitments, always verify identities before transferring money, and, importantly, share personal mistakes openly so others can learn and avoid similar pitfalls.
