Background of the Incident at Casino Rama

A man from Burlington endured over two years of legal battles following a violent encounter at Casino Rama that resulted in criminal charges against him. This experience left him with lasting physical injuries and significant financial burdens.

Legal Proceedings Halted Due to Delays

In December 2022, Daniel Dobson, 41, was detained at Casino Rama following a confrontation involving casino security and the Rama Police. Authorities charged him with assaulting officers, making threats, and resisting arrest, totaling eight counts. Dobson has consistently asserted his innocence, insisting the accusations were fabricated and that he was the victim of an unprovoked attack.

On April 7, 2024, Justice A.M. Nichols of the Ontario Court of Justice in Orillia stopped the prosecution, citing that the extended delay in handling the case violated Dobson’s right to a timely trial under the Charter.

Although Dobson welcomed the decision, he described the ordeal as a “nightmare.” He revealed that he spent approximately $25,000 to defend himself against what he claims were unfounded charges. Dobson detailed that security personnel tackled and restrained him as he tried to leave the casino quietly, resulting in alleged mistreatment during his arrest.

He suffered concussions and continued pain in his arm and wrist. During detention, officers reportedly covered his face with his sweatshirt, shackled his hands and feet, and transported him without a seatbelt, causing him to lose consciousness briefly. Despite his requests, medical attention was not immediately provided.

Lawsuit and Allegations Against Casino Rama and Authorities

Police reports accused Dobson of biting an officer and a security guard during the conflict, accusations he denies. To challenge this, Dobson hired an independent forensic dentist to review the evidence.

In 2024, Dobson initiated a civil lawsuit seeking $3.5 million against Casino Rama, its parent company Gateway Casinos and Entertainment, the Rama Police Service, and several officers and security guards. His lawsuit alleges negligence, excessive force, false arrest, and malicious prosecution. Casino Rama has submitted a defense, while the Rama Police have yet to respond.

Additionally, Dobson filed a complaint against a Rama police officer for alleged abuse during his arrest and transport; however, the complaint was dismissed after an internal investigation found no misconduct.

Dobson continues to experience daily pain and is advocating for accountability and an official apology. His objective extends beyond financial restitution, aiming to expose what he perceives as failures within the justice system.
