One-Third of Canadians Criticize Loved Ones for Traveling to the United States

Growing Disapproval Among Canadians Towards US Travel
While Canadians recognize that not all Americans hold extreme or offensive views, there remains considerable criticism towards traveling south of the border. A recent poll by Abacus reveals that about 33% of Canadians express discontent or judge friends and family who choose the United States as their holiday destination.
Increased Social Stigma Around US Vacations
This rising tension between Canada and the US has largely been fueled by the divisive and aggressive politics during President Donald Trump’s administration. Notably, nearly half of young Canadians aged 18 to 29 believe that visiting the US for leisure justifies social disapproval. Older age groups, while less harsh, also share reservations about holidaying in the US.
The poll surveyed 1,850 Canadians between January 9 and January 14. Amid increasing concern over America’s unpredictable political behavior, many Canadians worry about their neighbor’s growing role as a disruptive force within the Western alliance.
Impact of US Political Actions on Canada-US Relations
President Trump’s public disputes, such as his criticism of Norwegian leadership over the Nobel Peace Prize and imposing tariffs linked to Denmark and Greenland’s autonomy, have heightened international tensions. These actions have trickled down to affect tourism, with Canadian travel companies reporting a decline in customers planning trips to the US, sometimes viewing such travel as disloyalty.
Consequently, Canada has experienced a downturn in incoming American visitors as well. For example, Air Canada noted a significant 40% reduction in cross-border travel during November compared to the previous year. Other airlines serving routes between the two countries have seen similar decreases.
Rising Canadian Patriotism and Travel Boycotts
Overall, Canadians are showing increased patriotism by avoiding travel to the United States, reinforcing a growing travel boycott against their southern neighbor. This shift reflects broader concerns about the US’s political direction and its effect on Canada-US relations moving forward.
