Broadway Opposes the New Times Square Casino Proposal

Theater owners in Broadway have raised strong objections to the proposed casino development in Times Square. They warn that this plan threatens the future integrity and vibrancy of New York’s renowned Theater District.

Playbill Inserts Encourage Theatergoers to Speak Out

Recently, theater audiences have found leaflets inside their Playbills urging them to oppose the casino project. The plan is supported by Caesars Entertainment, SL Green, and Jay-Z’s Roc Nation. These pamphlets warn that the casino could negatively affect local businesses, increase crime and traffic congestion, and potentially force some theaters to close.

The Broadway League, representing 24 theaters, is distributing these materials as part of a campaign to gather public support before an important advisory vote scheduled for late September. League President Jason Laks emphasizes that the casino poses a significant threat to Broadway’s economic and cultural ecosystem, potentially leading to fewer show attendees and job losses.

The casino is planned to be built at 1515 Broadway, the location of the Minskoff Theatre, home to the long-running show The Lion King. Proponents argue the project will bring substantial renovations and inject financial growth into the area.

Caesars Responds Highlighting Employment and Tourism Potential

Caesars Palace has dismissed concerns about the casino’s impact, clarifying that the project is intended to complement rather than compete with Broadway productions. The company spokesperson mentions strong support from entertainment unions and local businesses, and emphasizes the expected benefits such as job creation, increased tourism, and higher ticket sales.

Notable figures including rapper Fat Joe and radio personality Charlamagne tha God have publicly backed the casino at a recent hearing. Representatives from Rev. Al Sharpton’s National Action Network also voiced support, highlighting the potential positive economic impact.

Local Skepticism and Community Opposition

Despite these endorsements, many community members remain doubtful. Local groups and activists express concern that the casino could disrupt the neighborhood’s character and strain public services.

Opposition messages like “No Times Square Casino” have started appearing on digital signs throughout the area, reflecting increasing grassroots resistance. A six-member Community Advisory Committee, including representatives from city and state agencies, will play a key role in advising on the state’s final licensing decision for the project.
