Paul Johnson Joins BHA Board

The British Horseracing Authority (BHA) has brought Paul Johnson, the CEO of the National Trainers Federation (NTF), onto its board. Johnson’s deep experience in the horse racing industry makes him an excellent fit, filling the position left by John Ferguson following the conclusion of his term.

Details of Johnson’s Appointment

Johnson was appointed as one of the two member-nominated directors on the BHA board. His nomination came from key industry groups including the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association, Racehorse Owners Association, and licensed racing personnel.

With a long-standing career in UK horseracing, Johnson is familiar with the BHA, having previously headed its Racing Department. Additionally, he has served as a director of Great British Racing and has been active with the Racecourse Association.

His appointment took effect immediately, coinciding with the BHA’s ongoing efforts to form an independent board of directors.

Johnson Expresses Honor at His New Role

Paul Johnson shared his enthusiasm about joining the BHA board, describing it as a significant privilege. He emphasized his commitment to contributing to the sport’s continued growth and enhancing its governance as the organization moves toward establishing full board independence.

He also expressed gratitude to John Ferguson for his valuable service to the board over the years.

David Jones, the BHA’s senior independent director, welcomed Johnson, highlighting him as a key asset for the team during this pivotal time. Jones also acknowledged Ferguson’s impactful contributions to the horseracing industry through his board role.

New Leadership at the Helm: Lord Charles Allen Named Chairman

The BHA recently announced that Lord Charles Allen of Kensington has been appointed as the chairman of its board. Lord Allen issued a statement outlining his dedication to advancing the future of horse racing.

He underlined that horse racing should be inclusive and accessible to all, praising British racing’s rich heritage, exceptional standards of quality, integrity, and animal welfare.

Lord Allen envisions transforming British racing into a modern, influential sport recognized worldwide—one that draws new fans, supports its community, and maintains exceptional care for the horses.

Ongoing Challenges and Future Outlook

Meanwhile, the BHA continues to oppose the UK government’s proposed increase in racing taxes, advocating for the best interests of the sport and its stakeholders.
