Bet365 Withdraws Support for Several Horseracing Events

Bet365 has decided to end its sponsorship of multiple horseracing events in response to the recent changes in the United Kingdom’s gambling tax regulations. This move marks another significant shift in the industry as companies reassess their commitments in light of the new financial landscape.

Details of Sponsorship Withdrawals

Following suit after Entain’s exit from sponsoring The Coral Cup at the Cheltenham Festival, Bet365 has announced it will discontinue backing events such as the Old Newton Cup and Lancashire Oaks at Haydock, as well as the Craven Meeting at Newmarket and select races during the July Festival. While Bet365 will fulfill its current obligations for the Craven Meeting, it has opted not to renew its sponsorship, ending a partnership that spanned nearly ten years. Moreover, the cessation of support for Haydock events concludes a collaboration that has lasted over two decades, leaving these races without their primary sponsor.

Company Statement on the Sponsorship Changes

A representative from Bet365 expressed that the decision to end these sponsorships was challenging but necessary. The company attributed these changes largely to the increased gambling taxes introduced in the UK, which have placed additional financial pressure on operators within the sector.

Context of UK Gambling Taxation and Industry Reactions

The UK government recently implemented substantial increases in gambling taxes, despite industry warnings about the potential negative impact on the gambling and horseracing sectors. Although the horseracing industry secured an exemption from some of these tax hikes, critics, including the Betting & Gaming Council, argue that the exemption is insufficient and that the broader tax increases still threaten the economic health of horseracing. Some observers found it surprising that Bet365 cited the tax exemption as a factor in ending sponsorships.

Industry Trends and Sponsorship Transitions

Bet365 is not the first firm to withdraw from horseracing sponsorships amid these tax changes. Entain’s withdrawal from The Coral Cup sponsorship led to BetMGM stepping in, with the race being renamed the BetMGM Cup. These shifts highlight a period of transformation within the industry as companies navigate evolving regulatory and financial challenges.
