September Sports Betting Activity in Arizona

The Arizona Department of Gaming has released its recent monthly report on sports betting activity in the state, revealing a complex picture. While the total amount wagered on sports saw a notable increase, the overall revenue earned by sportsbooks declined. The report also highlights FanDuel as the leading operator in the Arizona market during September.

Increase in Betting Handle but Decline in Revenue

Sportsbooks in Arizona experienced a 16.3% growth in the total betting handle for September, with players wagering an impressive $851.3 million. This figure stands out as one of the highest monthly totals recorded to date.

The majority of wagers were placed online, with approximately $847 million spent through digital platforms, compared to just $4.4 million at retail sportsbooks. This underscores the strong preference for mobile betting among Arizona players.

Despite the surge in betting volume, sportsbooks saw their revenue fall. After paying out $794.3 million in winnings to bettors, the adjusted gross receipts before deductions dropped to around $55 million. This represents a 28.9% decrease compared to the same month last year, largely due to favorable outcomes for players.

Further deductions—including $35.4 million spent on promotional offers and free bets—reduced the net revenue to $19.6 million for the month. This figure is nearly half of what was earned in September of the previous year and marks the lowest monthly revenue since July 2022.

Breaking this down by platform, retail sportsbooks generated $992,700 in revenue, while online sportsbooks accounted for $18.6 million.

FanDuel Leads the Market

FanDuel stood out as the top performer, converting a betting handle of $254.5 million into $8.5 million in revenue.

Although DraftKings had the highest online betting handle at $268.2 million, its revenue lagged behind, totaling $3.6 million from mobile betting and an additional $681,900 from retail locations.

BetMGM ranked third, earning $3.9 million in online revenue from a handle of $97.7 million, alongside $288,400 from retail revenue generated on $592,600 in wagers.
