Aristocrat and Light & Wonder Resolve IP Dispute with Major Settlement

Settlement Reached Between Aristocrat and Light & Wonder
Aristocrat Leisure Limited and Light & Wonder have jointly announced the resolution of their ongoing legal disputes in both Australia and the United States. This agreement ends months of conflict surrounding intellectual property concerns between the two companies.
Details of the Dispute and Agreement
The dispute centered on Light & Wonder’s game Dragon Train, which Aristocrat claimed was developed using its proprietary trade secrets and copyrighted materials. Aristocrat also raised similar issues regarding another Light & Wonder game called Jewel of the Dragon.
Following extensive negotiations, Light & Wonder has agreed to a settlement that includes a payment of $127.5 million to Aristocrat for damages related to the alleged misappropriation of intellectual property.
Additionally, Light & Wonder recognized the use of specific Aristocrat mathematical information in creating both disputed games. As part of the settlement, they committed to permanently halting the global commercialization of these titles and to striving to remove existing gaming terminals featuring them.
Light & Wonder has also promised not to reuse Aristocrat’s proprietary math data and to destroy related documentation. Both companies have initiated confidential discussions to identify any further concerns linked to the use of Aristocrat’s intellectual property in Light & Wonder products.
In return, Aristocrat agreed to drop all legal claims against Light & Wonder. The companies also acknowledged the importance of innovation in game development and pledged to uphold the protection of proprietary information and respect intellectual property rights moving forward.
Positive Reactions from Leadership
Though many aspects of the settlement remain confidential, company leaders have expressed satisfaction with the resolution. Trevor Croker, CEO and managing director of Aristocrat, emphasized their dedication to safeguarding their intellectual property while fostering innovation within the gaming sector.
“We welcome this positive outcome, which includes significant financial compensation and follows the decisive action we took to ensure the preservation of Aristocrat’s valuable intellectual property assets.”

Matt Wilson, CEO of Light & Wonder, expressed regret over the incident, attributing it to actions by a former employee who improperly used Aristocrat’s math data. He affirmed Light & Wonder’s commitment to conducting business ethically and respecting competitors’ intellectual property rights.
Wilson concluded by stating that the settlement protects the interests of customers, employees, and shareholders, allowing the company to focus on delivering leading market content without further disruptions.
