Apple Implements Mandatory Age Verification for 18+ App Downloads

New Age Verification Regulations by Apple
Apple has introduced a mandatory age verification system in countries like Brazil, Australia, and Singapore. This change prevents users from downloading apps rated for individuals 18 years and older unless they confirm their age. This measure aligns with new international laws aimed at protecting younger users.
Automated Age Verification and Developer Responsibilities
The age verification process on the App Store is now automated, giving developers the ability to confirm a user’s age range without accessing personal data. Despite these advancements, developers remain responsible for ensuring their apps comply with local laws and meet additional regulatory standards.
These age verification tools are set to be available soon in two U.S. states: Utah, starting May 6, 2026, and Louisiana, beginning July 1, 2026.
Details on Apple’s Age Verification API
Apple has introduced the Declared Age Range API, a feature designed for iOS, iPadOS, and macOS. This API is currently in beta testing and offers new capabilities to assist developers.
Through this API, developers can receive information indicating if age-related regulations apply to a user and whether the user must share their age range. The API also informs developers if parental or guardian consent is required for significant app updates affecting children.
Brazil’s Stance on Gambling Elements in Apps
In Brazil, apps must meet specific criteria to be rated 18+. One important factor includes the presence of Loot Boxes, which are regarded similarly to gambling.
Brazilian lawmakers have emphasized that young people should not be exposed to gambling-like features until they reach adulthood. Consequently, any app that includes Loot Boxes must carry an 18+ rating to restrict access to minors.
